Dear Secretary General Guterres,
We are writing to express our deep concern about the upcoming Durban IV conference being planned under UN auspices; and ask for you to use all your resources and influence to cancel it. The September 22 conference that’s marking the 20th Anniversary of the 2001 World Conference on Racism in Durban should not take place.
The original conference twenty years ago was hijacked by people who had one agenda – to delegitimize and call for the destruction of Israel. It established a false narrative that Israel practices apartheid as had been the law in South Africa, governing every aspect of life for black and colored South African citizens. There is no parallel to Israel.
By promoting this, the Durban conference and everything that’s come out of it not only dismisses the very real problems of racism throughout the world, and take precious UN resources to do so at the expense of genuine needs. It also dishonors the memory of the actual suffering of South Africans during apartheid.
The United Nations giving credence to, much less housing this conference is an injustice of the same dimension as was its infamous 1975 resolution calling Zionism racism. Less than a generation later, the UN came to its senses and repealed the “Zionism is Racism” resolution. Yet now, twenty years later, the lies that Durban has done have created more damage and harm the very well being of the Palestinian Arabs on whose behalf it claims to protect. These should not be celebrated but buried.
The leaders who gave birth to Durban and all that’s come out of it do not hide their singular goal to delegitimize and destroy Israel, with its founder, Omar Barghouti saying as much in multiple forums.
Housing a UN conference that will perpetuate this does a disservice to actual victims of racism around the world, to the establishment of peace in the Middle East, and the well being of Palestinian Arabs and Israelis being able to live in peace. It perpetuates a lie that needs to end.
This conference also comes at a time where antisemitism, many times resulting in violence and murder continues to rise and the concerns of many in the Jewish world, as well as the countries who refuse to participate, is that instead of focusing on ways to combat racism and antisemitism, the results of this conference will instead focus on promoting the latter.
You can end the lie. The UN should give no credibility to this conference. We call upon you to cancel it immediately.

Le escribimos para expresar nuestra profunda preocupación por la planificación de la próxima conferencia de Durban IV bajo los auspicios de la ONU; y pedirle que utilice todos sus recursos e influencia para cancelarlo. La conferencia del 22 de septiembre que marca el vigésimo aniversario de la Conferencia Mundial sobre el Racismo de 2001 en Durban no debería de realizarse.
La conferencia original de hace veinte años fue secuestrada por personas que tenían una agenda de deslegitimar y exigir la destrucción de Israel. Establecieron una narrativa falsa de que Israel practica el “apartheid” o segregación racial como había sido la ley en Sudáfrica, que rige todos los aspectos de la vida de los ciudadanos sudafricanos negros y personas de color. No hay paralelo con Israel.
Al promover esto, la conferencia de Durban y todo lo que ha surgido de ella no solo descarta los verdaderos problemas del racismo en todo el mundo y utiliza valiosos recursos de la ONU para hacerlo a costo de necesidades genuinas, también deshonra la memoria del sufrimiento real de los sudafricanos durante la segregación racial.
El hecho de que Naciones Unidas avale esta conferencia, y mucho menos servir como anfitriones, es una injusticia de la misma dimensión que su infame resolución de 1975 en la que llamaba racismo al sionismo. Menos de una generación después, la ONU recobró el sentido y derogó la resolución “El sionismo es racismo”. Sin embargo, ahora, veinte años después, las mentiras que ha hecho Durban han creado más daño y perjudican el bienestar de los árabes palestinos en cuyo nombre dice proteger. Esto no debe celebrarse sino enterrarse.
Los líderes que dieron a luz a Durban y todo lo que ha surgido de ella no ocultan su objetivo singular de deslegitimar y destruir a Israel, y su fundador, Omar Barghouti, lo dice en múltiples foros.
Alojar una conferencia de la ONU que perpetúa esto le hace un deservicio a las víctimas reales del racismo en todo el mundo, al establecimiento de la paz en el Medio Oriente y al bienestar de los árabes palestinos e israelíes para poder vivir en paz. Perpetúa una mentira que debe terminar.
Esta conferencia también llega en un momento en el que el antisemitismo, que muchas veces resulta en violencia y asesinatos, continúa aumentando y con ello la preocupación de muchos en el mundo judío, así como en otros países que se niegan a participar. En lugar de enfocarse en formas de combatir el racismo y antisemitismo, los resultados de esta conferencia se centrarán en promover este último.
Puedes acabar con la mentira. La ONU no debería darle credibilidad a esta conferencia. Le pedimos que lo cancele de inmediato.
